Overview

Machine condition monitoring aims to detect changes in vibration signature before a machine actually fails. Crystal Instruments supports both accepted strategies in a single portfolio. Critical, expensive assets are protected by permanently installed systems that measure continuously; less critical machines are covered by route-based periodic measurements taken with handheld data collector/analyzers guided by advanced database and analysis software.

The continuous path centers on permanently mounted Spider-80X and Spider-80Xi front-ends, together with a Spider-HUB IEEE 1588v2 Ethernet switch and Spider-NAS storage. These acquire shaft-to-case gaps, case accelerations and bearing temperature or lubricant-debris signals on every channel. Record-on-alarm captures the raw waveform the moment a limit is exceeded, and EDM Cloud makes the data available from any internet-connected workstation.

The periodic path pairs the CoCo-80X handheld dynamic signal analyzer with the Vibration Diagnostics System (VDS). Operators walk a defined route, take consistent, error-free measurements, perform at-machine diagnostics, upload results to a PC for alarms and reports, and carry out one- and two-plane rotor balancing.

The approach is used across power generation (nuclear, coal, gas, hydro and wind), petrochemicals, paper and steel, where unplanned stoppages are unacceptable. Typical monitored assets include turbines, compressors, fans, pumps and gearboxes. The workflow follows common machine vibration monitoring practice (the ISO 13373 series), turning unexpected downtime into planned maintenance.
